Rail anchors, made of spring steel in a single-piece structure, are designed to secure the rail to its base to prevent longitudinal movement, i.e., “creep” of the rail caused by changes in temperature, gradient, traffic patterns, and train braking.
Railroad anchors are applied directly to the rail base and abut against the sleepers. They provide a large supporting surface against the rail base and railway sleepers, preventing cuts and wear, and ultimately extending the service life of the sleepers. Rail anchors are manufactured for specific rail weights and base widths and can be divided into two types: driven rail anchors and spring-loaded rail anchors.

During train operation, longitudinal forces are consistently applied to the rails, causing them to move lengthwise. Sometimes, this movement can even pull the sleepers along. This longitudinal movement is referred to as rail creep.
Creep typically occurs in several locations: on the main tracks of double-track railway sections, in the direction of heavy traffic on single-track lines, on downward gradients, and within braking zones when approaching stations.
Railroad track anchor often leads to issues such as uneven rail gaps and sleeper skewing. It is highly destructive to the track infrastructure and can even result in serious safety hazards like train derailment. Therefore, effective measures must be implemented to prevent creep. The common solution is to use rail anti-creepers (rail anchors) along with anti-creep braces to mitigate track creep.
